October 2019: Senior-Friendly Activities in San Diego

October in San Diego is always a wonderful time, as summer winds down but the hectic holiday season has not quite started. Spend the month recharging with a variety of senior-friendly events throughout San Diego County.

 

1. Fall Home & Garden Show
   When: October 4, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. / October 5, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. / October 6, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
   Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014
   Cost: $8, $1 for seniors 55+ on Friday the 4th.
   Plant lovers cannot miss the 30th-annual garden show, where hundreds of varieties of plants will be on sale. Talk to local growers for tips and advice, and check out the demonstrations and educational seminars to learn some new skills.
2. Polish Festival
   When: October 11, 5p.m.-11:30pm / October 12, 2 p.m.-11 p.m. / October 13, 12 p.m.-5 p.m.
   Where: St. Maximilian Kolbe Polish Roman Catholic Mission, 1735 Grand Avenue, San Diego, CA 92109
   Cost: $5
   The annual Polish Festival is a lively cultural celebration. Learn all about Polish culture, food, beer, and traditions. Listen to live music and watch Polish Folk Dancers kick up their heels while demonstrating native dances.
3. Taste of North Park
   When:  October 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
   Where: The heart of North Park, at University Ave & 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104
   Cost: $40 for food only, $50 for food and beer
   If you haven’t experienced the culinary delights in the lively neighborhood of North Park, this is a fun way to sample the delicious creations from 40 restaurants and 15 craft brewers. Stroll the neighborhood and enjoy the work of artists and musicians as you nosh on tacos, pizza, New Zealand food, and more.
4. La Jolla Art and Wine Festival
   When: October 12 & 13, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
   Where: Girard Avenue, La Jolla, CA 92037
   Cost: Free entry. Wine and Beer garden tickets sold separately
   Stroll around beautiful La Jolla during this free two-day fundraiser and art show. Now in its eleventh year, it’s one of the most popular wine festivals in Southern California. Enjoy the work of over 150 artists from across the U.S. and Mexico, and check out the interactive demos, science experiments, and arts and crafts—and treat yourself to a glass of wine or craft beer!
5. San Diego Film Festival
   When: October 15 at 5:30p.m. to October 20 at 10:00 p.m.
   Where: Various Locations
   Cost: Prices range from $59 to $599, depending on which package you choose
   Tired of what’s available on cable and streaming? Get a taste of what’s new on the film circuit during this five-day event, and be able to tell your friends which movies are worth seeing before they hit wide release in theaters.
6. Almost Famous: The Musical
   When: Every day except Monday through October 20
   Where: The Old Globe, 1363 Old Globe Way, San Diego, CA 92101
   Cost: Prices vary depending on show time and seat selection
   Based on the popular movie, Almost Famous is the story of a young man finding his place in the world and the characters he meets along the way. See the world premiere of the musical right here in San Diego.
7. Hallo-Wine Fall Festival
   When: October 19, 2019, 3p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
   Where: Historic Burnham House, 3565 7th Ave, San Diego, CA 92103
   Cost: $50
   Attend this fundraiser for Home Start, a non-profit child abuse prevention and treatment agency, and you’ll have fun while doing something good. Boutique wine and alcohol, delicious snacks, and live entertainment are included in the festivities.
8. Fall Antique Engine & Tractor Show
   When: October 19 & 20 / October 26 & 27
   Where: Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum, Museum Way, Vista, CA 92083
   Cost: $9
   In addition to the year-round exhibits like running steam traction engines, blacksmithing, weaving & spinning, the museum also hosts fun events in October like sawmill and milking demos, tractor games, and a pumpkin pinata.
