Throw a Family Spring Cleaning Party
For some of us, winter means cozying up in blankets, reading good books, or catching up on buzzed-about tv shows. This also means that certain house-keeping tasks may be set aside to worry about during warmer days. Well, those days will be here soon, so now is a perfect time to start your spring cleaning. Turn the chore into an event with the family by throwing a spring cleaning party! We’ve got tips to make it a productive yet fun day.
Pre-plan Chores for Everyone
Depending on the ages of your children, you may need to divide chores by ability. Younger kids can dust low furniture within reach, while older kids can use a step-stool to clean the spots up higher. If you have kids in multiple age groups, have them work on their cooperation skills by tag-team cleaning a bookshelf or tall mirror.
Time to Declutter
Part of cleaning is organizing, and organizing is a lot easier when you don’t have a lot of items to store. Start the spring cleaning party by giving everyone time to go through their closets, dressers, and toy bins and pull anything they haven’t worn or played with in a year. Decide what is no longer needed and set aside to donate.
Play an Awesome Soundtrack
Keep everyone moving and the energy high by playing a fun soundtrack while you work. Create a playlist with everyone’s favorite dance songs, or songs that make you want to sing along. This will help put everyone in a good mood and create fun “dance break” moments between tasks. Plus, putting together the playlist can be its own fun activity to do as a family the night before in preparation of spring cleaning day. It’s also a great way to introduce the kids to some of your favorite classics, while learning what the kids are into these days.
All this cleaning is going to require some fuel, so plan snack breaks every 90 minutes or so. Set out veggies and dip, or a cheese tray with crackers and nuts. Keep the snacks light and healthy so no one needs a nap due to a heavy meal. Make snack time special by serving some family favorites, such as hummus and pita from your favorite Mediterranean restaurant, or the homemade guacamole everyone loves.
Make it a Game
Appeal to everyone’s competitive side by planning some timed activities. Games like “who can clean a window the fastest” or “put your laundry away in less than 5 minutes” can keep things interesting. At the end of the day, hand out small prizes or awards for winners of various challenges or overall MVP. Invest in some small silly trophies that you can re-use next year — everyone will be excited to defend their title!
Enjoy the Clean House
Now that the house is clean and organized, don’t forget to relax and enjoy it! Plan to order take-out (after all, you don’t want to make a mess so soon in the kitchen you just cleaned!) and spend time as a family by watching a movie, playing board games, or just reading in the same room. Take a minute to appreciate and enjoy how tidy your home is…while you can!
