Support is Key at Any Stage

Support groups for patients diagnosed with cancer support survivorship at any stage

Hearing the words “you have cancer” is life-changing. Thankfully, more people are surviving cancer than ever before.

“Everyone is different when it comes to the type of support they need and when they need it,” explains Bev Mangerich, RN, a nurse educator who works with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at Scripps Health. Bev also facilitates a young women’s breast cancer support group for women ages 40 and under.

“Some people seek out support when newly diagnosed, wondering how they’re going to get through what lies ahead,” she says. “Others need support as treatment ends and they try to figure out how to move forward. Our goal is to walk with people into survivorship at any stage by providing the support they need.”

Cancer support group benefits

Scripps’ cancer support groups help survivors realize they are not alone. Groups help survivors maintain a positive attitude, regain a sense of control and take an active role in their recovery.

Support groups are available for individuals impacted by different types of cancer. Additionally, survivors find support in integrative health classes for yoga, healing through movement and Scripps’ Strength and Purpose Through Activity (SPA) program, an 8-week holistic wellness program for cancer survivors.
