Easy Ideas for a Staycation Without Leaving Home

You may not be traveling right now due to budget, family, or health reasons, but it’s still important to take a vacation that allows you to relax and recharge. While vacationing in your own home may not be what you originally had in mind, with a little planning it can still be a lot of fun. Here are some simple ideas for planning a staycation in your very own home.

Act Like You are Out of Town

To really unwind, act like you would if you were not at home; no cleaning, no chores, no checking your work email. Put an auto-responder on your email saying you’ll reply in a few days, and let friends and family know that you may be slow to respond to texts or calls. Being at home may make it harder to remember you are on vacation, so it’s important to break from your normal routines.

Unplug the Devices

Pretend you’re staying at a quaint, remote hotel that doesn’t offer the internet and do a digital detox. Read a book, exercise, do some crafts, bake something delicious, and enjoy the activities you love but don’t always have time to do regularly.

Eat Special Meals

Part of the joy of traveling can be eating local cuisine, and let’s face it, putting fewer restrictions on ourselves than we may have in our every-day life. Don’t let being at home stop you — order delicious meals from local restaurants and have them delivered, or if you like cooking, try some extravagant recipes and make each meal special.

Have a Yoga Retreat

Make plans either by yourself or with the family to relax and connect with your mind and body. Set a peaceful vibe in your home with low lights and relaxing music. Treat yourself to a few yoga sessions each day — there are many free classes online — and practice meditation and gratitude journaling.

Go to Summer Camp

Summer camp has a new twist when you do it at home! If you have a tent, set it up in the yard or the living room. No tent? Camp out on couches and the living room floor! Play games, make friendship bracelets and dried pasta art, and then indulge in some stovetop S’mores while gathered around a candle “campfire” at the end of the day.

Bring Other Cities to You

You may not be traveling, but picking a new city or country each day as a theme is the next best thing. Eat popular cuisine from that location for each meal, listen to music by artists from those regions, and watch a movie or television show that was filmed there to enjoy the scenery as best as you can from home.

No matter how you choose to do it, be sure to take some time to relax and escape your everyday routines — you’ll feel recharged and inspired, which are important to maintaining good health!
