January 2020: 8 Family-Friendly Activities in San Diego

The new year is here once again. With the holiday whirlwind now behind us, January is a great time to get re-centered with some relaxed, family-friendly activities that will ease you into all the exciting adventures that surely await in 2020!

Take a stroll through the final days of Jungle Bells, enjoy some wintery fun in Poway or try a delicious (and discounted) new meal out this month with the whole family!

  1. Jungle Bells’ Final Weekend

    When: Through January 5th
    Where: San Diego Zoo
    Cost: $48 and up
    Perhaps December was just too busy and you couldn’t make it to the San Diego Zoo’s annual Jungle Bells festivities. Never fear! It is still going through January 5. Bring the family over for one last hurrah of holiday cheer, and be dazzled by the thousands of twinkling lights, exciting animal encounters, merry entertainment and tasty foods until late!

  2. Nature & Me Storytime

    When: January 9, 10:15 am
    Where: San Diego Natural History Museum, 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101
    Cost: Free for children under 2, $11.95 kids 3-17, $19.95 for adults
    If you have little ones ages 1-5, mark your calendar for storytime at the San Diego Natural History Museum on January 9! Every second Thursday of the month, the Nat hosts an “imaginative journey into nature through dynamic readings and visits to exhibitions.” Afterwards, visit the just-for-kids Backyard exhibit, where they can play and explore as junior natural historians!

  3. Twelfth Night

    When: January 10-19
    Where: San Diego Junior Theatre, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101
    Cost: $14-$16
    San Diego Junior Theatre’s 2019-20 season continues with Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” from January 10-19. Recommended for ages 13 and up, the famous play follows the quick-witted Viola, who assumes the disguise of a page boy and finds herself at the center of a love triangle.

  4. Winter Festival at Poway Community Park

    When: January 105-9 pm / January 11, 3:30-8:30 pm
    Where: 13094 Civic Center Drive, Poway, CA 92064
    Cost: Free, but bring cash for food
    The holidays might be over, but Winter has officially just begun! You won’t want to miss Poway’s annual Winter Festival happening on January 10 and 11 at Poway Community Park. Kids will love the magic and charm of the celebration, as they build snowmen, sled, roast marshmallows, ice skate and capture memorable moments in the free photo booth. And specialty food and drink vendors will keep you satiated the whole day!

  5. Ocean Commotion Day

    When: January 20, 11 am
    Where: San Diego Natural History Museum, 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101
    Cost: Free for children under 2, $11.95 kids 3-17, $19.95 for adults
    Since we are lucky enough to live just a short distance from one of the grandest coastlines in the world, why not take some time to explore what lies along it? The San Diego Natural History Museum hosts Ocean Commotion Day on January 20, a family-friendly event for adults and kids of all ages! The Nat will have cool activities, fun crafts and intriguing specimens that will help participants learn how to protect local tide pools as well as the gorgeous Pacific Ocean.

  6. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

    When: January 19, 2-5pm
    Where: Harbor Drive along the Embarcadero to Pacific Hwy
    Cost: Free
    Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of hope and peace at the Naval Officer’s 39th Annual MLK Jr. Parade on January 19 at the Embarcadero on Harbor Drive. The parade, one of the largest celebrations in the nation of its kind, will feature incredible floats, spectacular high school bands, drill teams and local peace and youth organizations.

  7. San Diego Restaurant Week

    When: January 19-26
    Where: Participating restaurants; check website for details
    Cost: Prices vary
    Restaurant Week returns to San Diego January 19-26! For eight days, over 180 delectable restaurants throughout the county will offer special lunch and dinner special menus at incredible discounted prices. This is a great chance to treat the family to a new cuisine, or make reservations at a tried-and-true local family favorite – all for a fraction of what you would usually spend!

  8. Happy Feet Meet-up

    When: Sunday, January 26, 10:30 am sharp
    Where: In front of San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park
    Cost: Free
    Have fun and get some exercise and fresh air during this group Happy Feet dance-walk. The purpose of the event is to have fun, be outdoors, enjoy spontaneously moving to the music, connect with others and have a fabulous time!
