January 2019: 9 Family-Friendly Activities in San Diego

The new year is here once again. With the holiday whirlwind now behind us, January is a great time to get re-centered with some relaxed, family-friendly activities that will ease you into all the exciting adventures that surely await in 2019!

Take a stroll through the final days of Jungle Bells, enjoy some wintery fun in Poway or try a delicious (and discounted) new meal out this month with the whole family!

  1. Jungle Bells’ Final Weekend
Perhaps December was just too busy and you couldn’t make it to the San Diego Zoo’s annual Jungle Bells festivities. Never fear! It is still going on this weekend, through January 6. Bring the family over for one last hurrah of holiday cheer, and be dazzled by the thousands of twinkling lights, exciting animal encounters, merry entertainment and tasty foods until late!
  2. Nature & Me Storytime
If you have little ones ages 1-5, mark your calendar for storytime at the San Diego Natural History Museum on January 10! Every second Thursday of the month, the Nat hosts an “imaginative journey into nature through dynamic readings and visits to exhibitions.” Afterwards, visit the just-for-kids Backyard exhibit, where they can play and explore as junior natural historians!
  3. Peter and The Starcatcher
San Diego Junior Theatre’s 2018-19 season continues with “Peter and the Starcatcher” from January 11-20. Suitable for all ages, the play is based on the best-selling novels and chronicles the delightful, magical journey of how a lonely orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan.
  4. Winter Festival at Poway Community Park
The holidays might be over, but Winter has officially just begun! You won’t want to miss Poway’s annual Winter Festival happening on January 11 and 12 at Poway Community Park. Kids will love the magic and charm of the celebration, as they build snowmen, sled, roast marshmallows, ice skate and capture memorable moments in the free photo booth. And specialty food and drink vendors will keep you satiated the whole day!
  5. Kids Marathon Mile at LEGOLAND
Open to kids of all ages and abilities, LEGOLAND’s annual Kids Marathon Mile makes for an incredible day of fun and comraderie. On January 19, the one-mile fun run lets kids enjoy the delightful sights and sounds of LEGOLAND as they skip, walk or run through the Park before it opens! A portion of proceeds are donated to Merlin’s Magic Wand, which supports families with children facing a disability or serious illness.
  6. Carnival of the Animals
On January 19, enjoy a free performance by The North Coast Symphony Orchestra chamber music players of Saint-Saëns’ beloved “Carnival of the Animals.” Children will adore the fanciful one-hour musical performance that includes a narrator, and each movement represents a different animal such as lions, elephants, giraffes and even a whole aviary!
  7. Ocean Commotion Day
Since we are lucky enough to live just a short distance from one of the grandest coastlines in the world, why not take some time to explore what lies along it? The San Diego Natural History Museum hosts Ocean Commotion Day on January 21, a family-friendly event for adults and kids of all ages! The Nat will have cool activities, fun crafts and intriguing specimens that will help participants learn how to protect local tide pools as well as the gorgeous Pacific Ocean.
  8. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade
Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of hope and peace at the Naval Officer’s 39th Annual MLK Jr. Parade on January 20 at the Embarcadero on Harbor Drive. The parade, one of the largest celebrations in the nation of its kind, will feature incredible floats, spectacular high school bands, drill teams and local peace and youth organizations.
  9. San Diego Restaurant Week
Restaurant Week returns to San Diego January 20-27! For eight days, over 180 delectable restaurants throughout the county will offer special lunch and dinner special menus at incredible discounted prices. This is a great chance to treat the family to a new cuisine, or make reservations at a tried-and-true local family favorite – all for a fraction of what you would usually spend!
