August 2018: Family-Friendly Events in San Diego
San Diego summers are pretty spectacular. Besides the beautiful beach days and those perfect, balmy evenings, summer in America’s Finest City means neighborhood street fairs, art walks and exhibits, and festivals galore.
Before the kids head back to school, make the most of your remaining summertime fun by bringing the family to these fantastic events happening near you!
- The San Diego International Kids’ Film Festival
The SDIKFF supports young, aspiring filmmakers by showcasing their work at this three-day film festival that runs from August 24-26. Over 150 international films are shown from young filmmakers in 30+ countries. Screening passes for kids under 18 are only $5 per film.
- ArtWalk At Liberty Station
On August 11-12, ArtWalk @ Liberty Station celebrates 13 years of bringing visual arts, music, and interactive art-making opportunities to families in San Diego. The event supports over 200 local visual artists and promotes the experience of owning original art.
- Cardiff Dog Days of Summer
Dog and puppy lovers, prick up your ears! This free event on August 12 features over 100 dog-related vendors, rescue groups, pet adoption agencies, and a “Maker’s Market Row.” Kids will adore the dog contests and be thrilled with the live music, fun activities, food trucks, and much more.
- Hillcrest CityFest Street Fair
San Diego’s largest neighborhood street fair stretches for nine blocks on 5th Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest. On August 12, take the family to check out over 300 arts, crafts, and food vendors, carnival rides, live bands, and a super cool kids’ zone.
- Chula Vista HarborFest
Head down to Bayside Park in Chula Vista on August 18 for HarborFest! The celebration has all sorts of exciting, unique events that the whole family will love, like a pet parade with costumes, a Discovery Zone with giant hamster balls (Xorbing) and water rollers, a kids’ rock-climbing wall, Lucha Libre pro-wrestling, a classic car show, and tons of tasty food and drink.
- Ramona County Fair
Maybe you missed the San Diego County Fair last month, or perhaps you’re just looking for some more county fair excitement? Either way, head to Ramona on August 25-28 for an awesome day of rides, games, food, kids’ entertainment, and an extensive beer and wine garden.
- Imperial Avenue Street Festival
This vibrant festival celebrates the rich history, arts, and culture of the diverse Greater Logan Heights community. On August 25, come out and browse four blocks of local artists, crafts, paintings, pottery, kids’ activities, and gourmet food and drink.
- LeucadiART Walk
If you’re in North County on August 26, swing by the LeucadiART Walk to experience some brilliant art, live dance performances, live art demos, mural painting, delicious local food and drink, and a new and improved Children’s Art Pavilion with multiple art stations, sponsored by Scripps Health.
- Ramona Bluegrass and Old West Festival
Yee-haw! Admission is free for the whole family at the 9th annual Ramona Bluegrass and Old West Festival, running from August 23-26. The festival features all types of live bluegrass bands, an Old West encampment, music workshops, daytime and nighttime jam sessions, fireside storytelling, food, rides, and kids’ activities.
- Wonderspaces: With Creative License
Possibly one of the neatest pop-up art exhibits to come to San Diego, Wonderspaces delivers extraordinary interactive art experiences to new audiences around the country. This year’s exhibit is at the B Street Pier downtown, where you’ll be amazed by a variety of unusual and fascinating art exhibits centered around sound, light, and touch. Runs through August 26.
Finally, don’t forget to check out some of San Diego’s great ongoing summer events, like Summer Movies In The Park, Nighttime Zoo, and free kids’ bowling — all still happening through the end of this month.
