November 2019: Senior-Friendly Activities in San Diego

Looking for something fun to do this November? San Diego has a wide variety of fun activities for seniors throughout the county!

Volunteer: Serve a Meal at Father Joe’s

When: November 4th, 4:15pm-6:30pm / November 16, 10:15am-1pm
Where: Check with volunteer coordinator for location
Cost: Free
Volunteers will prepare and serve food, and help in the dining room. It’s a great opportunity to give back and help your neighbors in need.

The Sky Tonight Planetarium Shows

When: November 6, 7pm-8pm or 8:15pm-9:15pm
Where: Fleet Science Center, Balboa Park, 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101
Cost: $18.95
Relax and enjoy a journey through the solar system, with expert narration by the Fleet’s astronomer. Afterwards, head outside and use a telescope to see San Diego’s night sky up-close.

Leo Carrillo Bird Walk

When: Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, 6200 Flying Leo Carrillo Lane, Carlsbad, CA 92009
Where: November 7, 8-10:30am
Cost: Free

Walk the trails and explore Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, while looking for birds and enjoying the scenery. It’s a lovely way to get in a walk and fresh air.

“The Story of Your Life” Legacy Storytelling Workshop

When: November 9, 2pm-3pm
Where: St. Paul’s Villa, 2340 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101
Cost: Free
This workshop is designed to help seniors open up about their most significant stories and life lessons. Learn how to identify and share your big moments and life story to pass along to future generations. This is a 4-part workshop, but it’s not necessary to attend all of them to learn how to share your legacy.

Open Bunker Day at Cabrillo National Monument

When: Every Saturday through the end of December at 9am
Where: 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr, San Diego, CA 92106
Cost: Free
Tour the bunkers and learn about the soldiers stationed at Fort Rosecrans during WWII. You’ll also get to see the weapons they used to protect our coast. Don’t miss as WWII reenactors bring the experience to life!

AARP Community Dance

When: November 16, 6-10pm
Where: Jacobs Center for Neighborhood, 404 Euclid Ave, San Diego, CA 92114
Cost: Free
Enjoy a fun night of age-friendly dancing and entertainment sponsored by AARP. Light refreshments will be served. Bring a non-expired canned or boxed food item for the San Diego Food Bank and you’ll receive a raffle ticket for the opportunity drawing.

Forever Fit for Seniors

When: Tuesday & Thursdays, November 5-18, 10:30-11:30am
Where: Lopez Ridge Recreation Center, 7245 Calle Cristobal San Diego, CA  92126
Cost: Free

Forever Fit for Seniors is a chair-based fitness class using seated and standing exercises, plus breathwork and meditation to strengthen both your body and your mind. The program also offers tips on how to work towards better health. 

Senior Citizen’s Services Annual Craft Sale

When: November 16 & 17, 10am-3:30pm
Where: Casa del Prado patios A, B, and room 101, 3325 Zoo Drive, MS 33 San Diego, CA  92101
Cost: Free admission
Stock up on all sorts of unique handmade gifts for the holiday season while supporting crafty seniors. This annual sale is organized by Balboa Park as part of their AgeWell program.

San Diego Women’s Chorus Concert “Legends”

When: November 16, 7-9:30pm / November 17, 4-6:30pm
Where: University Christian Church, 3900 Cleveland Ave, San Diego, CA 92103
Cost: $18 in advance / $20 at the door

The San Diego Women’s Chorus pays tribute to women singers throughout the decades, incorporating a variety of musical styles and featuring songs by Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Dolly Parton, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.

Chair Yoga

When: Mondays, November 4-25, 7-8pm
Where: Dahl Holistic Health, 7902 Dagget Street, San Diego, CA
Cost: $10 in advance, $15 at the door
Have you heard about the benefits of yoga, but are concerned that it will be too physically challenging? Students in this gentle yoga class use a chair to aid them in the postures and breathing exercises. It’s a great way to increase balance, strength and range of motion without having to get up and down from the floor.
