Media Chronicles Proton Treatment for Pediatric Cancer Patient at Scripps
The Santa Clarita Valley Signal recently chronicled the inspiring story of 10-year-old Zachary Johnson and his battle with brain cancer. Zachary’s tumor was located near his brain stem, making the accuracy of treatment of paramount importance. For the radiation part of his treatment after surgery, Zachary’s parents chose proton therapy, because it affects less healthy surrounding tissue than conventional X-ray radiation. A recent study showed that pediatric brain cancer patients treated with protons had stable cognitive function after treatment, compared to a significant decline for such patients treated with X-ray radiation.
