Scripps Expert Shares Insights Into Colorectal Cancer Screenings

In a recent U-T San Diego article, Scripps Clinic gastroenterologist Walter Coyle, MD, offered his perspective on recent developments in colorectal cancer screening. He said deaths from colorectal cancers in the United States have dropped by 40 percent during the past decade, due in part to greater awareness and screening. Dr. Coyle also discussed new screening options available to patients.

Media Chronicles Proton Treatment for Pediatric Cancer Patient at Scripps

The Santa Clarita Valley Signal recently chronicled the inspiring story of 10-year-old Zachary Johnson and his battle with brain cancer. Zachary’s tumor was located near his brain stem, making the accuracy of treatment of paramount importance. For the radiation part of his treatment after surgery, Zachary’s parents chose proton therapy, because it affects less healthy surrounding tissue than conventional X-ray radiation.
A recent study showed that pediatric brain cancer patients treated with protons had stable cognitive function after treatment, compared to a significant decline for such patients treated with X-ray radiation.
