January 2020: Senior-Friendly Activities in San Diego

If you are looking to start 2020 off on a high-note, there are lots of fun senior-friendly activities throughout San Diego County in January. Here are a few:

La Mesa Walks

When: January 7, 4pm
Where: Meet at Briercrest Park, 9001 Wakarusa Street, La Mesa, CA 91942
Cost: Free
Get outside and get moving with this group of La Mesa residents and friends. This is a 3 mile group walk, so bring a water bottle and comfortable walking shoes, and enjoy some exercise while making new friends!

Carmel Valley Senior Lunch

When: January 10, 12:30pm – 3pm
Where: Carmel Valley Recreation Center, 3777 Townsgate Dr San Diego, CA 92130
Cost: Free
Seniors aged 50+ are invited to a free lunch. Play cards and board games, and socialize with other seniors at this free event.

Guitar Lessons for Seniors

When: Every Wednesday from January 15 – February 12, 1 – 2pm
Where: Kearny Mesa Recreation Center, 3170 Armstrong St San Diego, CA 92111
Cost: $31 and must provide own guitar
Playing guitar is a fun hobby, and these classes are geared to both beginning and intermediate studies. No previous musical knowledge is needed, just a willingness to learn!

Guest Lecture Series: Artists in Love

When: January 17, 10am
Where: Copley Auditorium, SD Museum of Art, Balboa Park
Cost: $8 for seniors
Listen as Diane Arkin from the National Gallery of Art presents a look at the work created by artists in love. Romantic influences played a prominent role in the art created throughout the 20th century, and this lecture examines the connections between artist companions like Pablo Picasso and Fernande Olivier, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe, and Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock.

Seniors 55+ Golf Beginner Workshop

When: January 18, 3pm – 5pm
Where: Carlton Oaks Country Club, 9200 Inwood Drive Santee, CA 92071
Cost: $25
Ready to learn the basics of playing? This workshop introduces new players to the game, including how to swing, putt, chip, pitch and play. You’ll learn all the rules and etiquette of the game. All equipment is supplied.

Shen Yun

When: January 24, 7:30pm / January 25, 2pm and 7:30pm / January 26 2pm
Where: San Diego Civic Theatre, 1100 Third Ave, San Diego, CA 92101
Cost: $76.50 – $196.50
This popular theatrical experience takes audience members back to ancient China with a blend of dance, patented backdrop technology, incredible costumes, and a full orchestra playing original scores.

CFA’s San Diego Cat Show

When: January 25, 10am – 5pm / January 26, 9am – 5pm
Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, CA
Cost: $7 for seniors
Check out 450 exotic cats from all over the US! Judges will be rating cats throughout the weekend in various competitions, but all the cats are winners when it comes to cuteness. Cat lovers will enjoy seeing the 42 unique breeds representative at this yearly event.

San Diego Vintage Flea Market

When: January 26, 9am – 3pm
Where: The Observatory, North Park 2891 University Ave, San Diego, California 92104
Cost: Free Admission
Browse the booths at this vintage flea market and find treasures from the past! Vendors sell everything from vintage furniture and clothing, to jewelry and housewares. After you find a deal on a fabulous item, walk to one of North Park’s many delicious restaurants for a bite to eat.
