Change Your Behavior, Improve Your Health

To change behavior, focus on habits.

While many people make goals to improve their health, few achieve those goals. In changing your behavior, you can change (and improve) your health. Behavior change isn’t easy. That’s why so many health and wellness coaches ask their members to identify their personal motivation. Becoming healthier is a personal process that belongs to you alone.

Before you think about the behaviors you need to change, consider focusing on your personal reasons for wanting to make a health change. As you work towards changing your health behaviors, ask yourself: “Does this bring me closer or take me further away from my health goals?” As you recognize which choices and actions bring you closer to achieving your health goals, you’ll be able to tailor your behaviors to meet your health needs.

Habits that can have an immediate impact on your health include:

  1. Seeing your primary care doctor once a year for your annual wellness checkup. And at the end of your appointment, schedule next year’s appointment right then and there.
  2. Making small changes, such as portion control and eating more whole food and less processed food, to improve the quality of your diet.
  3. Move every day. You don’t need to be involved in a rigorous exercise regime. Don’t forget to double check your insurance plan. Many Medicare insurance plans include a gym membership for a lower cost.
  4. Review your Medicare insurance plan with an agent every year. During Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7), meet with an agent to review your current medications and health concerns. A Medicare insurance agent can compare plans in your area for you to find one that fits your budget and health needs.

You are your greatest resource.

You know your body, your health, your current behaviors, and your goals better than anyone else. Health behavior is an ongoing process. So start small, and focus on why your health matters to you.
