How to Build the Best Summer Backyard

We’ve all experienced it –– backyard envy. We know exactly which neighbors have the perfect backyard for lounging, playing, and enjoying the San Diego weather. Try these DIY ideas to ditch backyard envy and transform your own space into the backyard of your dreams for you and your family.

Backyard Beach 

Can’t make it to the beach? Why not build one? Start by picking out an area in your yard that is flat and open. Next, choose your favorite shape and size of a sandbox. You can get browse sandboxes to fit your backyard at places such as Walmart, Home Depot, or Wayfair. Once you have a sandbox picked, fill it with your favorite sand toys like shovels, castle buckets, sand molds, and more. Put an umbrella in the sandbox to add shade for the little ones during the hot summer days and celebrate your new backyard beach!

Colorful Planters

Looking for a way to liven up your backyard? Adding a little colorful fauna should do the trick! Start with a variety of different geometric shapes, colors, and texture of pots. (If you are on a budget, you can also make your own geometric pots from home.) Once you’ve picked out your pots, fill them with lively green plants or bright flowers, which you can find at local San Diego nurseries including Eden, City Farmer’s Nursery, or North Park Nursery.  

Make it Cozy

Ready to brighten up your backyard at night? Start by finding string lights, tree lights or other various outdoor lights locally at Light Bulbs Unlimited Encinitas, Lamp Plus, and Urban Lighting. To complement the lights, add comfortable cushions, chairs, and outdoor furniture to enjoy the warm summer nights. To amplify your cozy backyard vibe, consider tiki torches, hammocks, candles, and rock speakers – if you’re really getting into it!

Start a Garden

What better way to put your backyard to good use than to start a garden? Begin by sectioning out a portion of your yard that you want to start your garden, preferably an area with adequate sunlight. Next, purchase a raised garden box. Once you have a garden bed, visit local San Diego garden centers such as Armstrong Garden Center, Fat Plants San Diego, or Green Gardens Nursery to pick out your favorite fruits, vegetables, spices, and herbs to put in your garden along with nutrient-rich soil. Starting a garden is easy, fun, and can be done with the entire family!
