Where to Take Cooking Classes

Maybe you grew up in the kitchen, with a parent or grandparent who instilled a love of cooking in you at a young age. Or maybe you grew up on take-out and canned goods and never really learned the basics in the kitchen. No matter if you are comfortable in the kitchen or frequently burn toast, taking a cooking class is fun for people of all skill levels!

There are lots of wonderful places to take cooking classes in San Diego, and plenty of online cooking classes if you’d rather learn from the comfort of your own kitchen.

Reasons to Take a Cooking Class

  • Expand your skills by learning a cooking style you’ve never done before
  • Get info and tips from an expert on cooking a different type of dish or cuisine
  • Hands-on learning with instructor supervision lets you get immediate feedback and tips
  • Be able to ask questions and get answers in person
  • It’s a bonding experience — take your parents, your child, best friend, or a date to a cooking class to create a memorable experience
  • Meet new people — even if your class is online over Zoom, you may enjoy talking to like-minded people during the class
  • The investment in the class will pay off when you begin eating out less and cooking at home more

Where to Take Cooking Classes Online and in San Diego

Hipcooks

4048 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104 / currently only online

While Hipcooks has a North Park location for in-person cooking classes and events, due to the pandemic all their classes are currently online only. However, that’s not a bad thing, as their list of online cooking classes is extensive! They’ve got classes covering everything from knife skills, brunch, chocolate lava cakes, and more! Invite a friend or family member from out of town to join you online for a class to do something unique and special together.

Katie’s Healing Kitchen

Wine Vault & Bistro, 3731 India St, San Diego, CA 92103 / currently only online

Pre-Covid, San Diego clean-eating chef Katie Farina hosted demonstration-based cooking classes where students would eat delicious vegan items while they watched how she prepared them. Her in-person classes are on hold for the moment, but she has several classes you can purchase through her website and watch on-demand. Try “Junk Food Made Healthy & Vegan” where you’ll whip up a cauliflower “Chick Fil-A” sandwich copycat that will make you happy about eating vegetables.

Harvard Cookin’ Girl

7441 Girard Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037, by appointment only

Specializing in events like children’s cooking parties, birthdays, team building events, and celebrations, Harvard Cookin’ Girl offers thoughtfully-planned cooking experiences. Owner Bibi Kasrai’s mission is “to introduce you to authentic food in an intimate social setting that mirrors the warmth and lively ambiance of your grandmother’s kitchen.” One-on-one and small group classes with Bibi are also available.

Sur la Table

Fashion Valley Mall, 7007 Friars Road, San Diego, CA 92108

Sur la Table in Fashion Valley is hosting in-person classes as of writing, but be sure to check with them in case that changes. If your chopping skills could use some help, take their knives skills class — it’s helpful to have someone show you the proper way to hold a knife and techniques for making easy work of things like onions and tomatoes. Kids 14+ are welcome, and this is a great way to build their cooking confidence.

Cozymeal

Throughout San Diego and Online

Cozymeal’s concept is to offer a “culinary experience” both in person and online. Classes are taught by chefs from an array of culinary backgrounds and specialities. Cooking classes are hosted both online or you can attend an in-person event at the chef’s location. You can even book an event at your own home, and a chef will come and teach a class for you and your friends — a fun and unique idea for birthday or anniversary parties!
