Tips for Your Trip to the Miramar Air Show

Tips for Your Trip to the Miramar Air Show

The Miramar Air Show is fast approaching! From September 22nd-24th, MCAS Miramar’s flight line will be transformed to accommodate static aircraft displays, simulation rides, fun activities for kids, ride and drives, and a performance lineup of over 100 military and civilian aircraft.

Before you attend, we have some tips for navigating this year’s new Air Show security policies, and ideas for how to stay cool, comfortable, and carefree while you enjoy the largest military air show in the country.

Plan for High Temperatures

Wear the Right Clothing

The flight line at MCAS Miramar is typically sunny and hot. Opt for light, breathable fabrics, and cover up as much as possible to protect your skin from sun damage.

Don’t Skimp on the Sunscreen

Speaking of sun protection, don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. You may also want an umbrella. Only hand-held umbrellas are allowed.

Bring Snacks

Miramar Air Show does not allow ice coolers or chest, so be sure to pack snacks that don’t require refrigeration. Apples, grapes, bananas, nuts, pretzels, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are all relatively healthy options.

Stay Hydrated

Pack several unopened water bottles. Military personnel will be checking your belongings to make sure all your liquids are unopened. You might consider freezing several water bottles if you prefer drinking cold water to stay hydrated.

Be Aware of New Security Policies

Use Clear Bags

New security precautions are in effect for the 2016 Air Show, and MCAS Miramar is requiring that all belongings be carried in clear bags only. One large clear bag per person is allowed — either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or a commercially purchased clear bag. Small clutch purses are also permitted. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Clear Bag Policy before you pack your belongings.

Bring Your ID and Current Registration

Prepare to show your Photo ID for access into the Air Show. If you plan to park on the military base, you’ll need to show a valid driver’s license, current registration, and proof of insurance.

Get Informed

To avoid surprises at the check-in line, be sure to review the rest of the Air Show policies to learn what items are permitted on the base.

Come Prepared for the Day Ahead

  • It can get very loud at the show, so bring earplugs to protect your hearing.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking on the base.
  • If you aren’t paying for an admission ticket, bring some chairs so that you can comfortably enjoy the show.
  • Bring wet wipes for freshening up after using the outdoor restroom facilities.
  • Consult the schedule and list of performers to help plan your day.
  • Bring binoculars if you have them. Low and medium power binoculars tend to work better for honing in on detailed subjects, such as in-flight aircraft.
  • Bring a miniature, battery-powered fan with a mister to help you stay cool.
  • Bring cash in case you want to purchase something from vendors on the base.
  • If you have an air frequency scanner, bring it. You might enjoy listening to the air show controllers and pilots.

Parking Ideas

  • Consider parking up to two miles away from the Air Show and bringing a bicycle to cover the remaining distance quickly. You’ll avoid traffic in the parking areas on the base, and more importantly after the show, when traffic can be stuck for an hour or more.
  • If you park far away, you might try finding someone with a surrey bike to take you onto the base. There are typically many of them working the weekend of the airshow.
