July 2019: Family-Friendly Events in San Diego
July is considered the height of summer fun for many families — the school year has recently wrapped up, and there’s still a good stretch of relaxation to be had before Labor Day arrives.
Make the most of your family’s midsummer days and nights by adding these awesome events to your San Diego events calendar.
Summer Movies in the Park offers the ideal family movie night experience to all of San Diego. Find a flick near you on their city-wide movie schedule, grab your blanket and snacks, and enjoy a safe and special night under the stars with the kids. You might even meet some new neighbors!
Kids rule at Petco on summer Sundays! Through September, KidsFest at The Park begins 2.5 hours before a Padres’ Sunday home game. Come on down and join in the fun, which includes bounce houses, games, face painters, balloon artists, and many more kid-friendly activities.
Pack up the kids, folding chairs, and blankets and head over to the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas to enjoy outdoor family fun amongst the gorgeous flora and succulents. Every Thursday (Except July 4th), the Hamilton Children’s Garden comes alive with complete kid-friendly entertainment from 6:00 -7:00 pm. You can also enjoy extended hours and stroll throughout the entire grounds until 8:00pm.
Be a sailor for the night with a sleepover on the USS Midway! This overnight adventure gives families the opportunity to experience life on the longest-serving American aircraft carrier. Eat breakfast and dinner in the galley; sleep where sailors did during the ship’s deployment; explore the flight deck at night, and find hidden facts during behind-the-scenes tours. Sign the family up for one of only four opportunities to sleep aboard the ship this year- July 13, July 26, August 9 or October 26, 2019.
Mark your calendar for July 12-13, because you won’t want to miss 2019’s Imperial Beach Sun & Sea Festival. This year’s event will host an impressive schedule of events including a world-class sandcastle sculptors’ competition; a community parade; a pancake breakfast; live music; children’s craft activities and Kids Zone, and so much more.
If your family loves to jog, sign them up for the Live Well San Diego 5K and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run on Sunday, July 28. In partnership with 2-1-1 San Diego, this year’s run celebrates “Everyday Heroes” with a superhero-themed race and activities for kids of all ages throughout the morning. After you’ve burned off a few calories, refuel with health snacks and beverages and enjoy booths featuring local leaders in health and wellness as well as a kids fun zone.
On Saturday, July 20, children of all ages are welcome to visit Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center in National City for some free, family-friendly enjoyment. Participate in hands-on cooking lessons, food tasting stations, gardening, crafts, games, and physical activities in a lovely outdoor garden setting. Space is limited, so you’ll want to register in advance.
Experience the zoo after regular operational hours all summer. Every day until September 2nd, the San Diego Zoo will stay open until 9:00pm. Come for the animals and stay for live music, activities, interactive shows, and animal encounters. On top of the activities – visiting the zoo is one of the healthiest outings your family can have.
Whether it’s watching a movie under the stars, seeing a rockin’ live band on the beach, or tasting some scrumptious local fare, your family is sure to enjoy a memorable July here in America’s Finest City.
