Healthy Popcorn Toppings

Popcorn is more than just a snack that pairs perfectly with watching movies, it’s also a healthy treat. Popcorn is an unprocessed whole grain, and full of the antioxidants that protect cells from free radicals. If that’s not enough, popcorn is also full of B vitamins, iron, zinc, protein and fiber.

However, popcorn is often slathered in butter and salt, negating its health benefits by adding lots of fat and sodium. In order to enjoy this treat often and keep it as healthy as possible, here are some suggestions for unique and healthy toppings. So grab the corn, and get poppin’!

Pro tip: lightly spray your popcorn with olive, avocado, or coconut oil before adding toppings. Not only are they considered healthy fats that help reduce cholesterol and provide cell-boosting nutrients, a light coating of oil will help spices stick to the popcorn better.

Chili lime

For a tangy-yet-spicy flavor combination, squeeze some fresh lime over your popcorn, and sprinkle with chili flakes. Toss to coat.

Nut Butters

Grab some almond or peanut butter and melt in a saucepan. Add a little maple syrup, stir, and drizzle to coat your corn. While nut butters will add some fat to your snack, it’s a healthy fat and a good source of protein.

Cinnamon & Cayenne

Sweet and spicy comes together perfectly when you combine these two spices. Mix the spices together in a small bowl, and then sprinkle over your freshly popped corn.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Have a healthy fall treat any time of the year by tossing your popcorn in pumpkin pie spice. If you want to ratchet up the dessert-appeal, sprinkle the popcorn with a little powdered sugar and toss with the pumpkin pie spice.

Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast, commonly referred to as “nooch”, delivers a cheesy, savory, nutty flavor. Nooch is a common substitute for parmesan for people who don’t eat dairy, and is a complete protein and full of B vitamins, making it a healthy topping for any snack.

Pre-made Seasoning Combos

Save time and explore more flavor profiles by experimenting with what you find in the grocery store spice aisle. Taco seasoning, “everything” bagel, mushroom-based umami, ranch, and curry all make interesting and delicious toppings for your bowl of popcorn.

With options like these, it’s easy to change up your routine with fun and flavorful toppings, while enjoying all the healthy benefits popcorn has to offer!
