First Day of Summer: Your Guide To Summer 2018 in San Diego

While it’s true that San Diego enjoys summery weather pretty much all year long, there are still certain events that only happen June through August — and you definitely won’t want to miss them.

We’ve prepared your family’s ultimate guide to an electrifying summer in America’s Finest City!

  1. San Diego Zoo Nighttime Zoo 2018

Our city’s world-class zoo comes alive after dark! Celebrate the zoo’s extended evening hours with live music, shows, and fascinating animal encounters hosted by zookeepers. Kids will adore the nightly JAMBO! Parade, and be sure to catch the “Call of the Night” special performance with live musicians, rhythmic acrobats, lasers, lights, fog, and bubbles.

  2. Summer In Balboa Park

All summer long, there’s something for everyone at San Diego’s cultural hub — later museum hours, premier regional food trucks, kids’ summer camps, arts and crafts, and more. Be sure to catch a signature summer Twilight Concert at the remarkable Spreckles Organ Pavilion, which for 37 years has offered musical performances at dusk ranging from Dixieland jazz to big band to Latin salsa.

  3. Kids Bowl For Free At Tavern Bowl

Kids 14 and under bowl for free at East Village’s hip Tavern Bowl! Simply go to their website to sign up your children and they’ll each get one free game per day, Monday through Friday.

  4. Snorkel With The Leopard Sharks

Summer signals one particularly special San Diego event — thousands of leopard sharks migrate to La Jolla Shores’ warm waters to mate. Through September, your family can book a snorkeling adventure to swim among these fascinating — and harmless — sea creatures.

  5. Summer Movies In The Park

Summer Movies in the Park offers the ideal family movie night experience to San Diegans. Pack up your blanket and snacks, head to a local park, and celebrate a safe and special night under the stars. These fantastic movie-going events give families a great chance to build sense of community while enjoying a relaxing evening of entertainment.

  6. Circus Vargas

Kids and adults alike will love the family-run Circus Vargas’ daredevils, flying trapeze artists, acrobats, jugglers, contortionists, comedians, and much more! This summer, Circus Vargas delights audiences with their new “Dreaming of Pirates” performance. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes early for an interactive pre-show celebration, where kids can practice circus skills like juggling and balancing.

  7. San Diego County Fair

This iconic annual fair, which began in 1880 as a modest agricultural fair, has something for every age and interest. Bring the family to the Del Mar Fairgrounds from June 1 – July 4 to check out animals, food, live entertainment, rides, motorsports, exhibits, attractions, and so much more. On certain days, get unlimited, free rides when you buy a Fun Zone or Kids Zone BOGO ride ticket.

  8. Sea At Night + Shark Exhibits at LEGOLAND

Through August 31st, your kids will become expert explorers at LEGOLAND aquarium’s two newest interactive exhibits: Sea at Night and Shark Mission! Little ones can jump and leap into simulated bioluminescent waves at Sea at Night, and get up close and personal with six different species of sharks on three giant touch screens.

  9. No Rules… Except! At New Children’s Museum

The innovative New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego aims to unlock children’s innate creativity by exposing them to art and the creative process. This summer, introduce your kids to one of the museum’s most popular art installation of the past decade: “No Rules….Except!” This interactive, fun-filled room is packed with mattresses and hundreds of “pillow” tires for children ages 4 and up to play, crawl, and bounce to their heart’s content.

  10. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax at The Old Globe

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax has enchanted audiences for generations. This summer, from July 2 – August 12, The Lorax’s irresistible, big-hearted, mustachioed hero is delightfully brought to life at San Diego’s critically-acclaimed Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. You will be thrilled by the brilliant colors, infectious music, and Dr. Seuss’ beloved, enduring story.
