Clean Beauty Products in San Diego

Over the past several years, concerned consumers have been migrating from products containing chemicals to those with more natural ingredients. If you’ve heard the term “clean beauty” before, it essentially means that a product doesn’t contain ingredients that are controversial or unsafe.

Currently, there are no FDA regulation around terms like “clean” in the beauty industry, so it can be confusing to understand the difference between words like clean, green, and natural. (This article by Good Housekeeping gives a great overview.) Keep reading to learn more and where to shop for clean beauty products in San Diego.

How to Know if a Product is “Clean”

While it’s good to carefully read ingredient labels and familiarize yourself with the names of chemicals to avoid, it’s not easy to remember everything or understand what exactly a certain ingredient may be. EWG’s Skin Deep and Think Dirty both have websites and apps that let you enter a product name — or scan the UPC code of a product while you are in the store — and get a breakdown and rating on its overall safety.

Ingredients to avoid:

  • Fragrance
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Sulfates (SLS and SLES)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Mineral oil
  • Lead
