La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest

August in San Diego means SummerFest returns to LJMS! Experience Music Director Inon Barnatan’s inaugural SummerFest, as he explores and celebrates the theme of transformation.

Poway Summer Concert Series

Cost: Free admission, $10 on-site parking
Be sure to catch Poway’s summer concert series finale performance on August 11, featuring big band music from The Pomerado Community Band and special guests The Summer Winds.

History Talks!: How Coronado Split From San Diego

Where: Gaslamp Museum at Davis-Horton House, 410 Island Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101
Cost: Free for members, $5 for non-members
Coronado, the “crowned city,” officially incorporated in 1890. But this momentous occasion was far from smooth. Coronado historians share the story of how and why Coronado split from San Diego to become its own city and what happened along the way.

Corks For Cause – Serving Seniors

Do you love wine and charitable giving? Then this event is for you. Carruth Cellars will be donating 20% of their proceeds from 6 – 9 p.m. to Serving Seniors – a San Diego-based nonprofit that provides impactful programs and services to older adults living in poverty.

Open Cockpit Days

When: August 17, 18, 31; September 1, 9am – 3pm
Where: Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, 4203 Anderson Ave, San Diego, CA 92145

On select days, the cockpits of several aircraft at the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum will be open so visitors can experience U.S. Marine Corps aviation from a pilot’s perspective. See over 30 historical aircraft up close and personal.

Basics Of Backyard Composting & Vermicomposting

When: August 17, 10am – 12pm
Where: Ramona Branch Library, 1275 Main St., Ramona, CA 92065
Cost: Free
Composting can benefit your garden, home and the environment. This free, two-hour presentation hosted by expert educators will teach you all you need to get started with backyard composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms).

Presentation and Book Signing: “The Impossible Railroad”

Where: Santee Historical Society & Museum, 9200 N Magnolia Ave, Santee, CA 92071
Cost: Free
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the San Diego & Arizona Railway with a special presentation by local historian and author Reena Deutsch. Learn why the railroad was deemed “impossible” and how its line through Santee is the last link in the southern transcontinental rail network.

William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”

Where: The Old Globe Theatre, Balboa Park

The greatest love story of all time is brought to vivid life on The Old Globe’s intimate outdoor stage under the stars. Don’t miss this delightful, modern take on the Shakespearean classic.

The Second Annual Thanks(for)giving In August

The North County Food Policy Council’s second annual fundraiser event provides turkeys to local families in need during the holiday season. Help out your community while enjoying cocktails, dinner, a silent auction and live music by acclaimed international performing songwriter Gregory Page.

The San Diego Festival of Books
