April 2019: Family-Friendly Activities in San Diego

For the first time in seven years, California is officially out of a drought. This makes for an extra-special April here in San Diego––one where our city is defined by green rolling hills and bursting, colorful blossoms everywhere you turn.

Enjoy some fabulous outdoor family-friendly activities this April, and take in San Diego’s natural beauty while having a blast together!

  1. Cirque du Soleil’s VOLTA
    When: Through May 5
    Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds
    Cost: $65 and up
    Ages: All ages
    This spring, you don’t have to travel to Las Vegas to catch a world-class Cirque du Soleil performance. Head to the Del Mar Fairgrounds to catch a jaw-dropping performance of Cirque du Soleil’s VOLTA! The story follows Waz, who goes on a quest to find his true self––with the help of some crazy-talented, BMX-riding acrobats!
  2. Desert Super Bloom
    When: Through April 30
    Where: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
    Cost: Free
    Ages: All ages
    After a prolonged, wet winter, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is now blanketed in radiant wildflowers. The rare desert super bloom is expected to last through the end of April. Pack a lunch and bring the family up to witness the gorgeous floral display. And if you’re game, check out some other great places near San Diego to see the super bloom!
  3. SEA The Change at Living Coast Discovery Center 
    When: Through September 2
    Where: Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista
    Cost: $11 and up
    Ages: All ages
    The Living Coast Discovery Center, dedicated to educating the public on coastal resource conservation, presents its new interactive SEA the Change seasonal exhibit! Your whole family can explore native species through hands-on exhibit features and animal encounters. In particular, the exhibit focuses on how we can help combat pressing environmental issues like habitat destruction, climate change and ocean pollution.
  4. Butterfly Jungle at San Diego Zoo Safari Park
    When: Through May 12
    Where: San Diego Zoo Safari Park
    Cost: $46 and up (free for Zoo Members)
    Ages: All ages
    Looking for a majestic, interactive nature experience? You won’t want to miss the Butterfly Jungle at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park! The gorgeous exhibit features thousands of beautiful butterflies fluttering in an aviary among exotic birds and flowers. Guests can stroll among the butterflies and are even encouraged to wear bright colors to attract them!
  5. Photos With The Easter Bunny
    When: April 12-20
    Where: Seaport Village
    Cost: $35
    Ages: All ages
    Hop on down to Seaport Village to have your family’s photo taken with the cuddly Easter Bunny in a lovely, springtime setting. The price of photos includes a USB flash drive with all of your pictures, from which you can choose your favorites. There’s no appointment necessary, and tasty Easter treats are provided!
  6. Spring EGGstravaganza
    When: April 13-21
    Where: Birch Aquarium
    Cost: $15 and up
    Ages: All ages
    Scuba Bunny is diving into the aquarium to celebrate the arrival of spring! On weekdays, you can enjoy The Scuba Bunny-themed Dive Show and egg scavenger hunt throughout the aquarium with prizes. On Saturdays and Sundays, additional fun activities include the Shark Egg Craft, Explore-It! Egg-sploration and meeting egg scientists from Scripps Oceanography.
  7. Spring Fling Food Truck Festival
    When: April 15-19
    Where: Balboa Park
    Cost: Free
    Ages: All ages
    Are you a family of foodies? Then you won’t want to miss the Spring Fling Food Truck Festival in Balboa Park, where over a dozen of San Diego’s most popular food trucks line El Prado! In addition to scrumptious fare, this family-friendly event features live bands, dancers and free, hands-on games and activities for kids and families.
  8. Botanic Garden Bunny Party
    When: April 20
    Where: San Diego Botanic Garden
    Cost: $15 and up
    Ages: Ages 2-6
    The San Diego Botanic Garden ushers in the arrival of spring with their annual Spring Party with Bunny! Bring your little ones to enjoy the Easter bunny, adorable real bunnies and other small animals, and spring crafts. There’s also a parade and a stuffed bunny hunt, with each child receiving a plush rabbit friend to take home!
  9. Belmont Park’s Easter Bash
    When: April 21
    Where: Belmont Park
    Cost: $5
    Ages: All ages
    Bring the family down to Belmont Park’s 7th Annual Easter Bash for egg hunts, free kids’ activities, photos with the Easter Bunny, live music and entertainment, and of course, all the rides and games the amusement park has to offer! All beachfront boardwalk restaurants will also be offering a delicious Easter brunch.
  10. San Diego EarthFair
    When: April 28
    Where: Balboa Park
    Cost: Free
    Ages: All ages
    This spring marks the 30th annual EarthFair in Balboa Park––the largest free annual environmental fair in the world, drawing over 60,000 visitors. Visitors to EarthFair 2019 can expect more than 300 exhibitors, food pavilion and the eARTh Gallery arts and crafts show.
