8 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Family’s Health

Whatever your resolutions are for the new year ahead, they probably include improving your family’s health and well-being.

We’ve got some fantastic new year’s resolutions to better your family’s health in the new year. They’re easy to implement, fun and most importantly, give you lots of chances to bond!

  1. Practice gratitude

Life is hectic and fast-paced. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget to stop and take time to appreciate what we have. By practicing gratitude every day, we can live fuller, more joyful lives. Schedule a regular weekly date with your family to share what you’re each grateful for – no matter how small.

  2. Make a reading challenge

The benefits of reading are incredible. It increases creativity, reduces stress and makes us smarter. Create a reading challenge together as a family by choosing how many books you’d like to read this year. Make it a fun competition with prizes like a family dinner out or an exciting day trip. Read aloud to the kids, or if they’re old enough, have the whole family curl up with their own books and read together.

  3. Group meal planning and prep

Kids love to be part of household decision-making. Pencil in a day each week to ask them for their help with planning weekly meals, as well as prepping and cooking. Encourage them to “eat the rainbow” by asking them to choose veggies of every color throughout the week. Turn it into a game – if you hit all the colors in a week, that means a cool reward!

  4. Monthly adventure club

Quality time away from home is just as important to your family’s well-being as quality time inside it. Getting out into a new environment clears the mind, opens perspectives and grows relationships. Make it one of your healthy new year resolutions to plan a new, local adventure once a month together as a family.

  5. Grow a garden

A home garden is an affordable, gratifying way to let you know exactly where your food is coming from. It’s also a wonderful family bonding experience to plant, grow and harvest delicious, healthy foods from your very own backyard. Veggies like beans, carrots, peppers and leafy greens are especially easy to grow year-round here in San Diego.

  6. Exercise together

Exercising can be far more enjoyable when you have a partner. Or a small group! Take charge of your family’s health by committing to exercising together a few times a week. Rotate your favorite activities like walking, yoga, hiking – or even a dance party in your living room!

  7. Establish healthy routines

As much as kids may whine about doing homework or brushing their teeth, they need and crave routines. The craziness of the holidays can throw many families off track, getting them into less-than-ideal habits like erratic bedtimes, unhealthy snacking and too much screen time. Sit down and make a list together of healthy routines that your family values, and plan a fresh start this month.

  8. Carve out time to have fun

Finally, don’t forget to make time to simply be silly and laugh out loud together. Laughter does wonders for families, creating an instant connection between parents and kids. Game nights, pillow fights, silly group selfies and letting kids play with their food are just a few ways to let out those big belly laughs that are so great for your family’s health.
